Case Study: Wooden Gym Floor Replacement, Junior school, Norfolk

Sep 1, 2026

Service: Flooring Installation
Scope: Removal and replacement of gym flooring

Overview

Layn Developments was appointed by a specialist school in Norfolk to remove the existing floor in the gym and replace it with a new polished wooden floor. To avoid any disruption to pupils and staff, the entire project was carried out during the school holidays, with the space fully finished and ready for use by the time term resumed.

The Challenge

Communal areas in schools take a huge amount of daily footfall, so flooring needs to be durable as well as smart. The existing floor had reached the end of its life and needed to be lifted and replaced, but timing was critical: the work could only happen while the building was empty, meaning the whole job, from strip-out to a finished, polished result, had to be completed within a fixed holiday window.

Our Approach

Our team removed the existing floor and prepared the subfloor before laying a new wooden floor and finishing it to a high-quality polished standard. Working during the school holidays meant the area could be closed off completely, allowing the team to work efficiently without the constraints of managing pupils, staff or visitors moving through the space, and without any disruption to the school day.

The Result

The school now has a durable, polished wooden floor in its communal area, ready and looking its best in time for pupils and staff returning for the new term. The project was completed on schedule, with zero disruption to the running of the school.

Why It Matters

School environments call for careful planning as much as good workmanship. Scheduling disruptive works like flooring replacement around the school calendar means term-time learning is never affected, and pupils simply return to a refreshed space with no downtime in between. This is amplified in specialist schools that have to deliver a level of care for its pupils over and above that of a regular school.
